Metamorphosis

Advanced Studio Art: Grades 11th & 12th

For this project, students were invited to the Portland Museum of Art for an introduction on abstraction. To further investigate the idea of abstraction, students were asked to choose one of three themes: Conflict, identity, or memory. Students were asked not to make literal interpretations of their theme and had to produce 3 to 5 sculptures that would evolve in some way into each of their sculptures. Either progressing or regressing. Throughout this process, it was incredibly important that students had the ability to create something from their own personal experiences. Allowing the choice of any tools and materials that students were comfortable using was essential in understanding learner development. This project will be featured online through the Portland Museum of Art (Date TBD).
